Film Submissions for 2017 are now OPEN.

Encounters Festival is the UK’s leading short film and animation festival. The festival discovers, supports and develops new talent in filmmaking, providing a platform and meeting place for emerging and established filmmakers from around the world.

Encounters Festival presents one of the world’s leading International Competitions for short films and animation, and is also a gateway to the world’s most prestigious awards: The Oscars®, BAFTAs, European Film Awards and Cartoon d’Or.


Are you a filmmaker?  Have you made a short film?  Would you like to screen your short film at the UK’s leading short film festival?

Encounters accepts Live Action and Animated films from every genre  into our International Competition,  including documentary, drama, experimental, music or artist film, under 30 minutes long.  Also accepted for 2017 are new categories Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and 360 degree storytelling.

The international competition screens over 200 films from across the world, and the shortlisted films are in with a chance of wining one of our prestigious awards, up to £10,000 in cash prizes and the chance to qualify for The Oscars®, BAFTAs, European Film Awards and Cartoon d’Or.

Terms and Conditions:

Before submitting your film please download and read our Ts and Cs. They might be quite lengthy, but you’ll find most of the answers you’re looking for. Plus in order to submit, you’ll have to agree to them.

Guideline overview:

  • We accept films from  every genre
  • New categories for 2017 include VR/AR and 360 degree storytelling
  • Films must be no longer than 30 minutes including credits
  • Films you want to enter to Encounters 2017 must have been completed after January 1st 2016
  • Encounters does not require any premiere status
  • Our main submission platform is Withoutabox.




Dates and Submission Fees:

  • The early bird deadline for applications with a reduced entry fee of £20 is March 31st.
  • Regular deadline is May 23rd at £25 per film (UK student deadline is June 6th)
  • Late extended deadline is June 2nd at £40 per film

DepicT! – Can you do it in 90 seconds? 

DepicT! is a Watershed project which is part of Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival. It challenges entrants to get as creative as they can within 90 seconds to be in with a chance to win £2,500. If your film is under 90 seconds and is submitted to Encounters then it will automatically be entered for DepicT! 2016.  More info can be found here, and entry via this site is free.  Submissions for 2017 are now open via
