“It was as if De Seta were an anthropologist who spoke with the voice of a poet. Where did this voice come from?” Martin Scorsese
Following the tradition of Italian neo-realism, documentarist filmmaker Vittorio De Seta turned his gaze to the day-to-day life of Italian fishermen and labourers from the South of Italy, a world which in post-war Italy was threatened by the intensive industrialisation.
With his beautifully and respectfully observed vignettes, he captured a precious image of the rituals and traditions of these rural communities.
The result are these vibrant short films, which we have the honour to show on 35 mm in the stunning restoration executed by the Cineteca di Bologna.
