Bolexbrothers ‘The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb’ – A Special 25th Anniversary Screening, starting with a Q&A with key figures in the original production team.

During the 1990’s in Bristol there was a collective of radical creatives involved in film and animation. Established by Dave Alex Riddett and Dave Borthwick in the late 1980’s and called bolexbrothers (named after the well known 16mm Bolex camera) the company made a number of short films, commercials and two feature length films; ‘The Magic Roundabout’ (2005) and the dark dystopian ‘The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb’ (1993). The collective of individuals at bolexbrothers included some of Britain’s most successful creative talent who helped define a golden decade of British animation.

‘Tom Thumb’ directed and written by Dave Borthwick combines the technique of pixilation (using humans as stop-frame puppets) and stop-frame animation. It went on to win a number of top festival awards and is considered to be a cult classic and one of the most distinctive animation films in British film history.

This screening includes a rare look at a few other bolexbrothers shorts plus a special introduction from Dave Alex Riddett and Mike Gifford.

Dave Alex was the co-founder of bolexbrothers is also known for his work as Director of Photography at Aardman Animations where he has worked on all Wallace & Gromit short and feature length films amongst others.

Mike Gifford was the Production Manager on ‘Tom Thumb’ and is the owner/director of the camera company TAJELFILMS.
